Nowadays, we are using many English words in our
languages. All languages accept English words. Some English words do not only
convey the meaning. They are inevitable things to understand the
feeling. For Example the word ‘excuse me’ has no translation. (These type of
words are in each and every language. But here, I am talking about English) Not
only words, we have some sentences also in English which is not easy to understand
through verbal translation.
I am not in English environment, hadn’t been
too. So I can’t understand many Feelings of English language. But I have been
hearing and reading English, because we lack many things if we don’t use
English. I am not telling that there is no existence without English. Many
scholars are there, who don’t even know the basic English also. But they are
the great scholars in their language or subjects.
Now I am understanding simple words of
English. But, some time I fail to get the feelings or the gist behind the
words. Because I don’t have the English
environment. Now, if no speaker of English is surrounding me, I too have
opportunities to create English environment using the technology (It might be
watching English movies or Youtube lessons etc.). But I don’t do so. So I have
no English environment.
So Many time I can’t get the proper meaning.
For Example In my native, connection is pronounced as collection. So Whenever I
heard the word collection, I get the meaning of connection. The word teacher is
used for only female gurus. So if you call your male guru as teacher it is a
foolish thing at all for me. (Now in Bengaluru I saw many men introducing
themselves as teacher, So I have overcome from this female teacher theory.)
Recently, one of my friends sent a Whatsapp
message. The message was “Happy to announce
that....... Our family has grown with two feet👶🏻Blessed with
baby boy today at 7-06a.m.” I was totally confuse after reading the first
sentence. How would family grow with two feet? A tree can grow with two feet. But the family can’t. (At that time I thought
two feet means 60 centimeters. Because I know foot means 30 centimeters.).
After that I remembered, my friend was pregnant, she may have given birth to a
child. Afterwards I read the entire message, the meaning was correct what I thought.
Anyhow, I got the correct meaning, but not
at the first glance. My native is in
Dakshinakannada of Karnataka, where the Tulu language is being spoken. But I
haven’t talking Tulu also. (There was a ban for talking Tulu in school and Tulu
is not my mother tongue.). In this way, neither I have spoken English nor Tulu. But I understand the feelings and gist of Tulu
sentences. Because I was there in Tulu environment. That is how the environment
of language plays an important role in every language.
